The island is often larger than first time visitors realise with vast expanses of land to cover and lots of things to experience here. At Kangaroo Island Wilderness Tours we want your entire stay on our island to be your own version of perfect. Booking an exclusive tour with us will give you greater flexibility in both the destinations you visit and the time enjoyed at each attraction. We can certainly cater for those who wish to have shorter touring days too.
Below are just some of the options that are available in addition to any of the locations on our set-itinerary tours. If you’re not entirely sure what you’d like, we’ll happily talk with you about your interests and hobbies to create something perfect for your time here.
Tours for every interest
We specifically design our tours with something to suit everyone, however, if you have a particular interest area we’re always happy to work with that in mind and tailor the perfect tour for you.
For example, if you’re passionate about bird watching, bushwalking, wildlife photography, wildflowers, food or art there are plenty of island experts and specific locations we can call upon to create something that covers any special interest that you may have, as well as the major icons.
Private touring allows for greater flexibility in the time that you commence your touring. Some avid photographers may wish to take advantage of the morning light and early morning pick up may suit, likewise with capturing the perfect sunset. Your guide will be able to adjust your tour destinations on the day to get the best experience possible and ensure you always get the perfect shot.
We are lucky enough to have several leading bird experts on the island. They are passionate about research and conservation of the wide variety of birdlife we have here. If you have a keen interest in bird watching, given enough notice, we can tailor-make an itinerary that will suit your birdwatching desires.
If botany is your thing, springtime brings on a wonderful show of exquisite wildflowers- Callistemon, orchids, acacias, boronias and of course eucalyptus, just to name a few. Having said this, there is always something flowering, no matter what time you visit and many species are endemic to KI. Our drivers will know what is flowering and where on the island and can combine these with your touring.
Swim with the dolphins
Combining a day’s touring in the 4WD with a KI Marine Adventures swim with the dolphins experience, is a very popular option. Explore with us and your very own driver for half of the day and then meet Andy Neighbour at the Emu Bay jetty for an ocean-bound journey around the calm waters of the bay.
Here you’ll learn about the geological formations that make up the coastline of the north coast of the island. You’ll view the unique birdlife along the way and maybe get a visit from a Long Nosed New Zealand Fur Seal or two. Andy will then find a calm cove where you will wait for the main attraction to arrive.
We’re incredibly lucky to have a large pod of friendly wild dolphins that have chosen to share Kangaroo Island with us, as their home. With several generations of dolphins living together, they’re never far away from the shores. These gentle and curious creatures are more than happy to come and say hello to new friends.
Whether you decide to jump in and swim with the dolphin family or just view from the boat, this really is an experience of a lifetime that we promise you will never forget. Andy has wetsuits and snorkelling gear available for guests to use.

Family-friendly touring
Private touring is also suited to families, particularly those with young children. It is actually a requirement to book a private tour if you’re travelling with children 6 years and under.
If you are travelling with children we can tailor the tour to cater for your interests and add activities to keep the kids happy as well. We know that children often require a greater level of flexibility and we try to reduce the time travelling in the 4WD with more frequent stops if needed.
A play at the beach is always a hit with the kids, complete with looking for starfish. Be sure to ask us about family add on tours such as an outdoor action quad biking experience or a dolphin swim off the north coast.
